Tumblr is a fantasy land for most people, filled with seemingly perfect couples - straight or otherwise, well fitted clothes that hug and accentuate bodies, beautiful but expensive cities, and people wanting to become sex symbols with aesthetically pleasing but slightly useless sculpted bodies, perfectly toned chests, back dimples, pretty eyes, innocent smiles and poses that leave very little to the imagination.

The trick is to look past the illusions that Tumblr - no, that we, create in our minds and sift through countless unoriginals and mindless clones for the average Joe’s going through life day by day, documenting it in a way that a random reader may stumble upon and take something else from it other than unrealistic standards and a blow to an already struggling self confidence.

Having said that, I’ve met some really neat, interesting, inspiring, funny but abusive people (hi Christian), that made Tumblr more than just some form of outlet for me. Some, I’ve become good friends with and maintain contact outside of Tumblr, some - though I wish we talked more - are individuals whose lives I’m interested enough, and vice versa to feel some type of connection with minimal communication. Then there are some who have managed to integrate themselves into my day to day life that not a day goes by without talking or seeing them - they are my study buddies, my text buddies, my pen pals, my Skype nap-buddies, etc.

So I guess my point is, Tumblr does not suck, and while it does feel like a giant, cyber high school at times with the plastics, the horny-can’t-control-their-hormones ones, the ones who live off attention, the drama queen and kings, and the like, just like everything else in life, you gotta do some bit of work and some digging to find the good ones. And when you find them, pat yourself in the back and realize that you’re just as special and unique as they are for putting in that extra bit of effort.
